over the last year, daniel martin-mccormick has been exploring new terrain as relaxer, releasing a series of eps on the project s eponymous label. the third installment follows the paranoid whispers and mossy drip of the first two, yet is the most direct so far. “forming” and “forming (version)” offer distinct takes on a simple rhythmic motif, the first reaching for the heavens, and the b2 “version” sinking into hell. both develop gradually, drawing in the dance floor before unleashing, the a-side’s yearning strings and thunderclaps overflow with emotion, while “version” is a vortex of ever-escalating, dark intensity. in between is “monday,” a teeming environment with a deep bass throb, pounding drums, and shimmering percolating melodies.

Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

lars von licht’s -from arrows“ is exactly one of this sort: an almost 15min live jam, both simple and sophisticated. a track for special moments and for special people, perfect for reanimating supérieur. one of the frst persons whom i gave this tune last year s summer was lee burridge, who played it straight away at burning man. admittedly, this release took some time, but we wanted to fnd the right moment and the right remixer. we considered many options but came back to one of our own people in the end. dodi palese who released his connaisseur debut earlier this year, felt like the right person to challenge this track and we were right. he has transformed it into a tribalistic high energy bomb, with an unexpected, big synth theme, blowing you away. yes, we are more than happy about this release and it was well worth the wait.

french artist kool vibe is back on his own paris-based label kv records with a new 4 track ep. true to the mission assigned to the label, this release brings us back to the early 90s through basics sounds and elements which have defined deep house since then : fat syncopated rhythms, heavy and groovy basslines, warm chopped vocals. there is something raw and genuine about this record. basics and back to the reala definitely emphasize the minimal and raw side of deep house. tribute is humbly dedicated to the legendary todd terry, whose ultimate knowledge of the art of sampling contributed to shape house music in the early days. at last, sleazy joint (touch it, suck it) closes the record with a nasty and sexy touch. anyway, the whole ep is meant for the dancefloor and the simple pleasure of partying.

marathons began innocently, as a quick debut ep by an energetic swedish duo we found on soundcloud. within a couple months of chatting with the pair, artur bra&#776,,ndstrom and egil kahlbom, however, we realized our collaboration wasn t going to be simple, so cut and dry, so straightforward, and that s why we find ourselves here, a year after meeting them with a full album, not an in-and-out single, on our hands. what made it complex and intricate, you ask? why d we opt to squeeze eight originals into one long-player, you wonder? well, artur and egil are prolific dudes with fantastic ears and formidable work ethics. a couple of demos quickly sprouted offspring and became four, then six, then ten. rather than fight the arbitrary desire to trim the spread down to a 12inch, we figured we d aim higher and work on a proper album. what we constructed is, in a very classic sense, a long-player. here s that album! it s a sunny, loose, limber, uninhibited boogie through warm disco cuts and wobbly house jams and soulful funk slices. daytime chill-out with a nightclub architecture—or peak hour mayhem with a bright, clearheaded euphoria. marathons swings every which way and suits any mood, so drop that needle and try it on. then repeat, repeat, repeat.

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.

andrzej nowak is a polish early computer music composer who never found proper place in official contemporary music world. tracks produced between 1987 and 1994 as a score for never screened animation movies (the producer didn’t like them). lines of simple sounds, interrupted by primitive electronic trumpet and other fake instruments. are you sure it’s a film score? what was the thing that producer didn’t like? weird harmonies or too much rhythm?

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

four new loose and beautiful metropolitan house grooves from prolific nyc producer j albert aka jio albert whose mantra (as always) is to keep it simple, and of course, keep it strictly j! in addition to the grime beats he’s been releasing on soundcloud under the dj osom alias, jio has also explored other genres with a recent black opal release and a 12inch on his own exotic dance records imprint. strictly j, though is his scruffy take classic house on zones more into the hot music-soho vibes. characterized by busy percussion, off-kilter downtown beats, stops and starts, scattered breaks, and weirdly breezy melodies, these tracks are roomy def down for the summer. interestingly enough, i was subletting jios room last summer in ridgewood, queens and was sitting next to him as he made some of these tracks while i worked my tech support job. he was listening to a lot of buddy rich, bill evans, and jeremy steig at the time.

a year after his debut album viaggi, amsterdam based italian marco antonio spaventi is back with another fine full length statement. entitled -isola sommersa and landing on m>o>s recordings, it follows up after many great eps on the label over the last five years. spaventi has a passion for old school house but always brings it up to date. using hardware tools like a natural extension of his body, he cooks up rugged grooves, nostalgic moods and smoky atmospheres that cocoon you in sound of its own. as well as releasing on other labels like slow motion, secretsundaze, pizzico records and cos mos, he is also an acclaimed production wizard and runs his own professional studio.

following up on his exceptional 12&#8243,,,, debut numb (figure 73) earlier this year, seatoc mass delivers another ep of finely tuned and highly diversified techno deep space explorations. starting on an atmospheric note, cipher’s intricate melody winchingly twists its way under your skin while airy breakbeats faintly hint at the producer’s uk roots. in contrasting fashion the bleep- driven lost lakes sticks to its metronomic stomp, making for a simple yet utterly effective tool. choral howls and detuned synths merge on transform for a gentle yet trance-inducing introduction to the flipside. emotive highlight rain then sees the manchester producer sonically recreate a thundering storm, complete with flashing strokes of lightning and a downpour of celestial scale. the breakbeat returns on closer flying buttress, albeit now at much faster tempo, exploring the common ground between futuristic grime and techno. blending all these different styles and their distinctive tropes in a coherent statement is a feat not easily accomplished. yet here seatoc mass pulls it off again, developing further the confines of both his personal and the label’s sound.

nice price deal !!! for the first time chicago artists traxx & josh werner come together as jm strap and they are responsible for the a side of this record. we proudly present >the owl in daylight<, an amazing track that brings back the chicago jakbeat sound with an incredible bassline that seems alive, weaving all around the song to take it to the next level with a simple but intriguing dark pad and brilliant solid drums. on the flip we have >play error< by juanpablo. this madrid based artist is responsible for the frigio label and his track composed on the phrygian scale. the result is a dark and rythmic tune with a sweet melody and background voices. like the other tunes on this record >mute city< by lektoluxe remains at the underground level with galactic melodic synths and a fat deep bass that switches to acid tones at points.

poker flat recordings offers up another mouthwatering collaboration in the form of this ep by mennie and julien sandre. mennie hails from italy, and had fast been gaining a serious reputation on the underground, both as a resident at club 999 in his home country and as a talented up and coming producer. teaming up here with the frenchman julien sandre, this is an international project that will hit home with djs and house lovers globally. the night riots ep kicks off with partitions, which sees the boys in sparkling form - twisting and teasing a sick groove out of fairly simple sources.arth j follows a similar path the devil is in the detail, and mennie and sandre get down to some serious beat science, punctuated with some subtle chords and vocal stabs in the process. in a pixel world’ reveals the pair’s love of classic chicago vibes distilled though french touch, bringing in a super funky groove filtered though various effects and processes, and paying homage to the timeless sounds of early daft punk. ‘no more closes out the ep with a yet another weapon - a ray of house sunshine that skips along on a fidgety beat offset by filtered strings and chopped up vocal stabs. its got summer written all over it.

lovers rock recordings celebrates its tenth release with another lush compilation featuring tracks by three core members of the lr family and newcomer gunnar haslam. opener “vacation” by ital sees the label boss crafting a supple dj weapon out of a lysergic sonic ecosystem. the rapidly-maturing dj wey returns to the fold under his dj python alias with “amazonia,” an ambient bomb that allows a deceptively simple hook to lilt across a thumping reggaeton rhythm. gunnar haslam makes his lr debut with “vector no campo,” blending modular acid and perfectly crunched electro drums. finally sleeper cell close out with the shimmering, haunting “v.” the first lr release of 2016, lr no.10 exemplifies the label’s ethos and sound while pointing to the future, with eps by ital & halal, yoshinori hayashi and others slated for later in the year.
